At the weekend, seven Rotarians and partners attended the 41st conference for Rotary District 9640. As usual it was filled with inspirational speakers and gave us all a chance to catch up with Rotarian friends from around our district.

The speakers were:
  • Professor Michael Good AO - he has spent the last 15 years developing a vaccine against malaria, our club has been an ardent supporter of this.
  • Father Morgan Francis Batt - a local priest who climbs the highest peaks in the world, has served overseas in the army as a chaplain and is the parish priest at Burleigh Heads - reported as the largest parish in Australia.
  • Fay Jackson - founder of Vision in Mind and assisting those with mental health issues, taking a different approach to health professionals and credits Rotary with being there for her in her time of need.
  • Damian Loone - a retired Dectective Sergeant who was instrumental in bringing Lynette Dawson's killer to justice, a crime that happened in 1982.
  • Kirra Pendergast - The Online Safety Agency, reminding us that we must be vigilant when using the internet and social sites.
  • Craig Foster AM - Australia's 419th Socceroo and 40th Captain, but who now devotes his time to being an humanitarian activist and was instrumental in getting Bahraini refugee Hakeem released from a Thai prison.
  • Michelle Tanner - Rotary Give Every Child a Future, ensuring that vaccines against all childhood diseases are made available to the children of the South Pacific.
  • DG Dave & Robii, Superindentant Scott Tanner and Craig Dowling- a Q & A session on the Rotary Program, "Say No to Domestic Violence and Yes to Respectful Relationships".
We also had time to have fun at the two evening events, which were finished off by our very own member Cliff Harmsworth winning the attendance prize, a trip for two to Lady Elliott Island. A wonderful, inspiring, and uplifting weekend that highlights why we do what we do best in Rotary, Service Above Self.
